  4. Is this a scam? How do I verify this is legitimate?

Epiq can verify your payment is real and a part of the CFPB’s distribution. Call us at 888-860-1014 during business hours, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday, except Federal Holidays.

You can verify that Epiq is contracted with CFPB by calling CFPB directly at 855-411-2372 or visiting their website: www.cfpb.gov/payments/HelloDigit. To learn more about CFPB and other CFPB matters, please visit www.consumerfinance.gov. If you enter “Hello Digit” into the search box, you can read CFPB announcements about this case.

Always be mindful that bad actors can attempt to scam consumers into providing sensitive information or money in exchange for funds from this or other distributions. This scam may look like the following:

    • A company or individual claiming they can “help” you receive a check, money, a gift card, or funds in some other form, provided you send them a preloaded gift card or money in advance. This is likely a scam.

    • A company or individual asking you for any banking details or credit card numbers to issue you a check in this matter. This is likely a scam.

    • A company or individual claiming they can help expediate the mailing of your check from this distribution. This is likely a scam.

    • A company or individual asking you for your Social Security number or your date of birth. You do NOT need to provide your Social Security number or your date of birth, and the CFPB is NOT collecting Social Security numbers or any dates of birth in this matter. If someone asks you for your Social Security number or your date of birth related to an issuance of a check in this matter, it is likely a scam.

Neither the CFPB nor Epiq will ever require you to pay any fees before or after accepting a digital payment or cashing a check issued by CFPB. If someone asks you to pay them money related to a payment you are meant to receive in this case, it could be a scam. More information on spotting scams is available on the CFPB’s website, www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/blog/beware-of-new-cfpb-imposter-scams.
